To add a new blog post using the Classic Editor in WordPress, follow these steps:

Login to Your Website CMS

  • Access your WordPress dashboard by adding /wp-admin/ to the end of your website URL and logging in with your credentials.

Go to the 'Posts' Tab

  • In the left-hand menu of the dashboard, click on 'Posts'.

Click 'Add New'

  • Click the 'Add New' button at the top of the 'Posts' page to open the Classic Editor.

Enter Your Post Title and Content

  • Enter your post title in the field at the top.
  • Write your post content in the main content editor. You can use the toolbar to format your text, add links, and insert media.

Adding Categories

Categories help organise your posts and make it easier for readers to find related content.

Navigating to Categories

  • In the right-hand sidebar of the post editor, find the 'Categories' section.
  • You can select existing categories by ticking the checkbox next to each category, or add a new one by clicking 'Add New Category'.

Add a New Category

  • Enter the category name in the provided field. Optionally, you can assign a parent category to create a hierarchy and add a slug (URL-friendly version of the category name).

Adding a Featured Image

A featured image represents your post visually and is often used in post previews, on the blog page, and within the blog post itself.

Set a Featured Image

  • In the right-hand sidebar, find the 'Featured Image' section and click 'Set featured image'.
  • Upload a new image or select one from your media library, then click 'Set featured image' to confirm your choice.

Using Tags

Tags are similar to categories but more specific, helping to further organise content.

Add Tags

  • In the right-hand sidebar, find the 'Tags' section.
  • Enter relevant tags separated by commas in the 'Tags' box, then click 'Add'. Tags help improve searchability and SEO.

Publishing the Post

Once you've added all necessary content and settings:

1. Save Draft

  • If you want to save your progress without publishing, click 'Save Draft' in the 'Publish' section of the right-hand sidebar.

2. Preview

  • Click 'Preview' to see how your post will look once published.

3. Publish

When ready, click the 'Publish' button. You can also schedule the post for future publication by clicking 'Edit' next to 'Publish immediately' and selecting your preferred date and time.

Additional Tips

  • Alt Text for Images: Always add descriptive alt text to images for better SEO and accessibility. You can do this in the media library before inserting the image into your post.
  • Excerpts: Add an excerpt to summarise your post. This can be found in the 'Excerpt' box below the main content editor.
  • Permalinks: Ensure your post URL (permalink) is SEO-friendly by editing it under the post title. Click 'Edit' next to the permalink to modify it.
